Barbie (2023) Film Analysis

LANGUAGE:

The movie is instantly recognisable as the giant 'B' in the classic Barbie font tells us that it's a movie about Barbie even though the title is not on the poster. The line "She's everything. He's just Ken." suggests that this could be a matriarchal society. The pastel colour scheme associates the movie with gender roles but could subvert them as it seems matriarchal. The people on the cover are smiling and this suggests that this could be  a family movie.

INDUSTRIES:

Barbie is a Warner Bros. Pictures film, starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling, and it grossed $1.448 billion worldwide. It was directed by Greta Gerwig and became the highest-grossing film directed solely by a woman.

AUDIENCE:

The target audience for Barbie(2023) spanned from young teenagers to adults as well as older audiences who grew up with the brand. It was rated 12A in the UK as it contained bright child-friendly colours it still had some mature comedy.

REPRESENTATION:

Barbie is initially represented in a stereotypical manner however the movie challenges the general lack of diversity from Hollywood as it showcases all kinds of Barbies all from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and occupations. In contrast, the Kens are treated like  second-class citizens - reversing traditional gender roles.
